Our Biosphere

Galloway and Southern Ayrshire, where Merrick Scottish Blackface Knitwear is based, is one of a worldwide network of UNESCO Biospheres.

Merrick Scottish Blackface Knitwear embodies the UNESCO Biosphere ethos of collaboration and innovation. We share the stories of the Biosphere’s farming communities, a tapestry created over hundreds of years working the hills. We draw on the skills of creatives with their lifetimes’ understanding of yarn, and bring local people together to celebrate wool and cottage industries at learning workshops and social events. We help people understand the circular economy and the imperative that farming, textiles, manufacturing (and so much more) are made part of it.

Our goal is to be practical, profitable, and transformative. Your purchase of a luxury, sustainable garment brings tangible benefits for the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere: 100% of profits are reinvested back into the region, through projects led by the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Partnership, a registered Scottish charity (SC044137) working across the UNESCO-designated area.
